Memoir Writing

Facilitator:  Coventry Kessler,  coventryk@yahoo.com

Meets:The 4th Monday of each month at 7:30 PM at Sternberger Artist Center, 712 Summit Ave, Greensboro, NC

Everybody has a story to tell, and the WGOT definitely wants to help you learn to tell yours. If you are interested in writing memoir, this is the group for you.

The WGOT Memoir Group, formerly led by Cynthia Schaub, will be resuming on Monday, June 24. Meetings will be at the Sternberger Center on the 4th Monday of the month at 7:30pm. Both old members and new are encouraged to participate.

The group’s new leader will be Coventry Kessler, a professional writer/editor who works at UNCG. Coventry is a long-time member of the WGOT. Her stories appeared in the Memoir Group’s 2011 collection You Must Remember This. She was also the chief copyeditor for the Poetry Groups’ Fire and Chocolate.

As in other critique groups, members will read and critique one another’s work, but Coventry will also offer instruction on topics like how to structure your story and how to make your prose livelier. So there is a “workshop” aspect. Both old and new members are encouraged to join.

Regular members will be expected to:

  • Have a clear goal in mind,  whether it’s writing a book or a series of stories for your family or  other audience.
  • Attend and contribute fairly consistently. If the group gets large enough, there may be submission page limits.
  • Be willing to learn how to critique effectively and be willing to have your own work critiqued.

You are welcome to observe the group for a session or two if you’re trying to decide whether to join. However, dues-paying membership in WGOT is required for full participation.

We are excited about helping you tell your story! Please join us!
